DESCRIPTION:In July 2009\, 46 of Australia’s and New Zealand’s brightest te
 rtiary science students gathered at the Australian Synchrotron for the fac
 ility’s inaugural winter school.\nThe four-day program aimed to give young
  researchers – Honours\, Masters and early PhD students – an understanding
  of synchrotron techniques and operation for research purposes. Participan
 ts attended lectures\, toured the facility and performed beamline experime
 nts that complemented their lectures.\nParticipation was open to all unive
 rsities in Australia and New Zealand on the basis of one nominated student
  per institution. All accommodation\, travel and catering expenses were pa
 id for by the Australian Synchrotron.
