DESCRIPTION:CHEIRON SCHOOL 2010 REPORT\nSix PhD students from Australian un
iversities attended the 4th AOFSRR Cheiron School in Japan in October 2010
.\nYe Wu and Connie Liu from the University of Sydney\, Mark Edmonds from
La Trobe University and Josephine Yin Tse Chong from Monash University wer
e funded by the Cheiron School. The Australian Synchrotron supported two a
dditional students: Wei Kong Pang from Curtin University of Technology and
Zhiqiang Liu from the University of New South Wales.\nThe school is an in
tensive\, two-week\, hands-on course on synchrotron radiation science and
technology for graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, young scientists
and engineers who want to pursue careers in a field requiring synchrotron
radiation and join a synchrotron radiation facility in the Asia Oceania r
egion. An annual event\, the Cheiron School is organised by the Asia-Ocean
ia Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR)\, RIKEN\, JASRI and K
EK and held at the SPring-8 facility in Hyogo\, Japan.\n&#160\;\nThe infor
mation below is&#160\;about the application process for the 2010 Cheiron S
chool. Please DO NOT USE this information to apply for the 2011 Cheiron Sc
hool.\nThe 4th AOFSRR Cheiron School will provide useful and basic knowled
ge and perspectives on synchrotron radiation science and technology for gr
aduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, young scientists and engineers wh
o want to pursue careers in a field requiring synchrotron radiation and jo
in a synchrotron radiation facility in the Asia Oceania region. Held annua
lly\, the Cheiron School is organised by the Asia-Oceania Forum for Synchr
otron Radiation Research (AOFSRR)\, RIKEN\, JASRI and KEK and held at the
SPring-8 facility in Hyogo\, Japan.&#160\; This year\, the Cheiron School
will be hosted by SPring-8 from Saturday 9 October 2010 to Monday 18 Octob
er 2010.\nThe curriculum will include lectures on a broad range of instrum
entation and applications topics\, round-table discussions with lecturers
and synchrotron radiation researchers/engineers about practical and specif
ic activities at synchrotron facilities\, and practical training sessions
on SPring-8 beamline facilities.\nCheiron School Travel Awards\nThe AOFSRR
will provide funding to support four individuals to attend the Cheiron Sc
hool\, these will be fully funded by the AOFSRR.&#160\; A further two plac
es will be offered by the Australian Synchrotronto highly ranked applicant
s to support their travel to the Cheiron School\, these awards will be val
ued at $AUD 2000.\nEligiblity\nApplications are open to PhD students and p
ostdoctoral fellows and who wish to pursue their career in a field requiri
ng synchrotron radiation.&#160\; However\, preference will be given to PhD
students who are actively pursuing research in a field requiring synchrot
ron radiation.\nApplicants must be currently enrolled at a recognised Aust
ralian university.\nApplication Process\nStudents who are interested in at
tending the school must complete an online application\, and attach a copy
of their academic transcript (undergraduate to current)\, resume\, a lett
er of recommendation from their principal academic supervisor and provide
proof of their current enrolment status.\nNew Deadline\nApplications close
 d on&#160\;Friday 16 July 2010. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.\nA
ssessment\nA maximum of six travel awards will be offered.&#160\; Applicat
ions will be ranked based on merit and alignment with the selection criter
ia using a review process involving the leading synchrotron scientists.\nN
otification\nAll applicants will be notified of the outcome of their appli
cation by early September 2010.\n&#160\;\nCheiron School Flyer (pdf\, 1.2
