Applications are now closed for the 2010 Australian Synchrotron Winter School on Synchrotron Radiation Science.

If you have applied to attend the Winter School, please check this page regularly for updates.

The Australian Synchrotron, in conjunction with ANZAAS, will be hosting the annual Winter School on Synchrotron Radiation Science from 12-15 July, 2010. The school aims to assist early career researchers to develop an understanding of synchrotron radiation science and its applicability to a vast range of fields of scientific research.

Over this 4-day course participants will be provided with an overview of synchrotron radiation science and its applications by world-leading experts. In addition, students will be provided with a unique opportunity to experience cutting-edge synchrotron science techniques for themselves – each student will be provided access to the Australian Synchrotron beamline of their choice to practice the techniques that may be of relevance to their research. This is an opportunity for early career researchers to enhance their existing skills and further their research careers.

Applications are open to students currently enrolled in an Honours program (or equivalent), or undertaking their first year Masters or PhD course in Australia or New Zealand. Students who are interested in attending the school must complete an online application (see below), and should attach a copy of their academic transcript (undergraduate to current) and a letter of recommendation from their principal academic supervisor.

A maximum of 45 places will be available for the Winter School. Applications will be ranked based on merit using a review process undertaken in conjunction with the leading scientists in residence at the Australian Synchrotron. In addition, to ensure that all students have an opportunity to participate, no more than three (3) students from any one Institution will be accepted to the School.

Course Fees

The Australian Synchrotron aims to support the development of young, Australian researchers and help them to achieve outstanding research outcomes using synchrotron radiation science. For this reason there will be no registration or course fees associated with attendance at the Australian Synchrotron Winter School.

Accommodation

The Australian synchrotron will organise and fully fund accommodation for students attending the Winter School from interstate and rural locations. Accommodation for Melbourne participants will be subject to the discretion of the Australian Synchrotron.

Meals

Meals will be provided during the day program, but breakfast and dinner will not be included.

Travel

The Australian Synchrotron will not be funding travel. Students will be required to arrange their own travel, including airport transfers, and must ensure they are available to attend all sessions.

Applications for the Australian Synchrotron Winter School are open from 1st March 2010 and will close at 12 noon on April 9th. No late applications will be accepted. Applications must be completed online. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday June 4th.

Enquiries should be sent to jonathan.debooy@synchrotron.org.au.
