Australian researchers are investigating whether nanoparticles in sunscreen can penetrate our skin and get inside our bodies – and how the immune system deals with them.

As part of this work, the researchers used the Australian Synchrotron to obtain x-ray fluorescence images that show the nanoparticles inside human immune cells.

The nanoparticle research is ongoing.

In the meantime, the researchers recommend using a combination of strategies, including protective clothing and sunscreen, to protect your skin from the harmful effects of too much sunlight.
