The Director of the Australian Synchrotron, Professor Keith Nugent, has been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) at La Trobe University.

The Australian Synchrotron Board warmly congratulates Professor Nugent on his new appointments and expresses their gratitude for his commitment in the role of Director of the Australian Synchrotron.

Professor Nugent said that “it has been an absolute privilege to serve the Australian Synchrotron and the decision to leave it has been a very difficult one. But La Trobe is a fine institution that is also the third largest university user of the synchrotron – I will remain part of the greater synchrotron community”.

Under Professor Nugent’s leadership, a $100M funding package has been secured for the future of the Australian Synchrotron for the next four years. Negotiations are currently taking place for the Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (ANSTO) to take over the management of the facility.

“ANSTO will be a great home for the Australian Synchrotron”, Professor Nugent said, “The new management structure will be well and truly in operation before I leave to take on my new role. My successor will find a truly world-class facility with great staff and a wonderful future”.

Professor Nugent was appointed Director of the Australian Synchrotron in March 2011 and he will take up his new role in January 2013.
