SANNUS_20120709_02web.jpgMore than 200 prospective new users of synchrotron and neutron techniques attended a full-day seminar and workshop at the AS in July 2012: the Synchrotron and Neutron New Users Symposium.

Students, postgraduate students, researchers and other participants learnt about the opportunities offered by the world-class scientific infrastructure available at the AS in Melbourne and the neutron beam instruments at ANSTO’S OPAL reactor in Sydney.

Scientific case studies, instrument capabilities and access logistics were covered at a level appropriate for new users by Australian experts in synchrotron and neutron techniques. Glynn Devlin (AS) and Joseph Bevitt (ANSTO) made a joint presentation on writing successful proposals to use the specialised x-ray and neutron beam instruments at the AS and ANSTO.

SANNUS_20120709_19web.jpgSymposium presenters included:

  • Garry McIntyre, Katy Wood, Mike James, Kirrily Rule, Richard Mole (ANSTO)
  • Danielle Martin, Alberto Astolfo, Kathryn Spiers, Anton Tadich, Helen Brand (AS)
  • Ian Madsen (CSIRO)
  • David Turner (Monash University)
  • Mark Eccleston (Aboriginal Affairs Victoria).

Information on the symposium presentations from these experts is available at: archive.synchrotron.org.au/sannus

This is the fifth time the annual symposium has been held, alternating between Melbourne and Sydney. Next year the symposium will be held in Sydney.
