5th Australian Colloid and Interface Symposium
30 January – 3 February 2011
Hobart, Tasmania

The two session themes for the ACIS meeting are (a) Minerals and Materials and (b) Neutron and Synchrotron Techniques. The two keynote speakers are Pupa Gilbert (nee De Stasio) from Wisconsin-Madison (materials and minerals: PEEM etc) and Michael Zharnikov from Heidelberg (synchrotron theme: photoemission and NEXAFS of surfaces). David Beattie ( ) is co-organising the two themes.

AXAA 2011
6-11 February 2011
Star City, Sydney, NSW

The AXAA 2011 Schools, Advanced Workshops, Conference and Exhibition provide opportunities for people working in the fields of laboratory x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction, and in synchrotron, neutron and other complementary scattering techniques, to participate in discussions, knowledge-sharing and networking. The meeting will showcase recent scientific results and exciting new developments in related instrumentation, software, and techniques of analysis. It will focus on advances in industrial and fundamental research, particularly those achieved though new developments in techniques.

13-16 February 2011
Novotel Pacific Bay Resort, Coffs Harbour, NSW

The 32nd Australasian Polymer Symposium (32APS) is organised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Polymer Division. Topics ranging from fundamental modelling to applied materials will include polymer synthesis, characterisation, physics of polymers, engineering, materials, and the interface of polymer science with other disciplines such as biomaterials, nanomaterials and surface science.

International School on Synchrotron Radiation
17-25 January 2011
Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) Campinas, SP, Brazil

LNLS and FAPESP are organising an international school on synchrotron radiation for students doing a PhD. The school will deal with scientific domains (structural biology, 3D-imaging, magnetism, nanosciences, catalysis, etc) rather than techniques. All lectures will be in English. Lodging, transportation and air tickets will be covered and organised by the School. Applications close 15 October 2010.

Crystal 27 SCANZ 2011 Conference
27-30 April 2011
Rotorua, New Zealand
The 27th Biennial Conference of the Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand will include sessions on:

  • synchrotron science
  • structural biology, enzymes, assemblies
  • applications in biotechnology and medicine
  • chemistry, materials science
  • supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering
  • methods, including complementary techniques.

Call for abstracts will open on 16 January 2011.

Erice 2011: The Power of Powder Diffraction
2-12 June 2011
Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Italy

The 44th crystallographic course at Erice Crystallography School will be a complete introduction to the diverse field of powder diffraction. Recent breakthroughs in experimental powder diffraction and data analysis mean that this versatile technique is now solving and refining inorganic, molecular and even protein structures relatively routinely.
