Small Angle Scattering (x-ray and neutron) has become a popular technique for analysing a wide range of materials on nanometre lengths scales. With the continual development of laboratory instruments and increasing access to x-ray and neutron beamlines, it has become relatively straightforward to take measurements. For SAS, the most challenging aspect is often data analysis and interpretation. Irena is one of the most widely used software packages for analysing small angle scattering and is applicable to a wide range of applications including materials science, chemistry, and soft matter systems.
The Australian Synchrotron is delighted to announce a two day, hands on workshop on the Irena package by its author, Dr. Jan Ilavsky from the Advanced Photon Source, Chicago USA.
To register for this workhop, click here.
The workshop will contain a mix of presentations and hands-on sessions covering the data processing, simulation and modelling capabilities of Irena. It is intended for current Users of the software, in order to boost your knowledge and skills and assist you with analysing SAS data in your research. The workshop will focus on applications in materials science, colloids, soft matter systems and the like.
Protein solution scattering Users interested in the ATSAS package should primarily consider attending the AusBioSAS Workshop to be held over 13 - 16 November at the Australian Synchrotron. A basic working knowledge of the Irena package is assumed and you will need to bring a laptop with Irena running on it. The plan for the course is:
Day 1:
1. Installation of both packages and verification of functionality, short presentation on data reduction and analysis in SAS
2. Nika data reduction:
a. Orientation in the program
b. Calibration/geometry
c. Mask design
d. Data processing, sector and circular data reduction
e. GI geometry, line profile, profile around ellipse…
(if really interested… f. Programing for Nika (look up functions))
3. Irena data analysis:
a. Orientation in the program
b. Import of data
c. Data plotting
d. Scattering contrast calculator
Day 2:
3. Irena data analysis continued:
e. Data manipulation
f. Unified fit, advanced analysis
g. Size distribution
h. Modeling tools
… other tools if time & interest...
A modest registration fee is needed to cover the costs of hosting the event; lunch and morning and afternoon tea is included each day. GST is included in the price. You will need to arrange your own travel and accommodation.
