The next Australian Synchrotron Open Day will take place on Sunday 13 October 2013.
Travel through space & time, to see the invisible
Did you know ...
- we slow down time?
- we see the invisible?!
The Australian Synchrotron Open Day is a once-a-year opportunity to get access to Australia’s only synchrotron – including areas normally restricted to specialist scientists and engineers.
Self guided tour brochures will help you on a journey through the National Centre for Synchrotron Science and around any of nine specialist beamlines.
There will also be the ever-popular presentation “Synchrotron science for dummies” and some activities for the kids.
The Australian Synchrotron accelerates electrons to almost the speed of light, to produce intensely bright light -- one million times brighter than the sun’s rays! The synchrotron light -- which ranges from infrared to hard x-rays -- is used to analyse a vast range of materials such as human tissue, plants, proteins, artefacts and minerals at the atomic scale.
By being able to see materials in such astonishing detail, the synchrotron is assisting researchers to investigate how medicines might be more effective, industry more innovative, and our energy solutions cleaner.
