A satellite to the Medical Applications of Synchrotron Radiation Conference 2010

An invitation to help shape the Australian Synchrotron Imaging and Medical Beamline to meet the needs of clinical researchers

The Australian Synchrotron is constructing a world-class facility for medical research. The ‘Imaging and Medical Beamline’ (IMBL) began phased commissioning in late 2008 and is scheduled to commence clinical research programs with patients in 2011. The IMBL will provide unrivalled x-ray facilities for medical diagnosis and therapy.

The priority given to medical research at the Australian Synchrotron has prompted enthusiastic support from the Australian biomedical, medical and clinical communities and has led to significant investment in the facility. This nexus of expertise, resourcing and commitment creates the potential for the IMBL to lead the world in key areas of clinical research and applications using synchrotrons.

Success lies in building instruments that can tackle the clinical communities’ research questions. This meeting will bring together scientific and technical synchrotron medical researchers from around the world with leading medical research experts and clinicians. This first-ever forum will present the aspirations of clinical researchers and discuss what is needed to make these new applications a reality.

The outcome of this meeting will be a clear roadmap that will drive the establishment of the IMBL.

Attendance is recommended to anyone interested in the medical and clinical applications of synchrotrons.

The format of the meeting will be:

  • Short talks by clinicians on challenges or research they would like to tackle using the IMBL.
  • Short talks by clinicians and researchers on the work they are doing using synchrotrons.
  • Lively discussions to identify the most promising medical research topics that will drive the design, construction and establishment of the IMBL facility.
